About Deepa
Born in Sirsi, a beautiful town on the western ghats in Karnataka state of India, Deepa is blessed to have come from a family that admires, performs, and encourages Indian classical art forms including Yakshagana, Hindustanani vocal and instrumental, and Bharatanatyam. From the early age of six, she started pursuing an Indian classical dance form called Bharatanatyam under the tutelage of her Guru Dr. Sahana Bhat. Through rigorous training and after honing her skills, in 2005, she performed her Arangetrum (a solo debut performance). She was featured in many dance productions as a lead dancer under the direction of Dr. Sahana Bhat.
After her studies, she moved to Banglore and trained under renowned Bharatantyam Dancer and Guru Karnataka kalashree Dr. Sathyanarayana Raju and received her advance training in dance.
Practicing Indian classical dance for more than 20 years, Deepa has completed Vidwat grade in Bharatanatyam from Karnataka Secondary Education and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Bharatanatyam from Tamil University, Tanjore. She has had the privilege of learning from veterans like Padmashri Vyjayanthimala Bali, Guru Smt. Bragha Bessel, Padmashri Narthaki Nataraj in various workshops. Over the years, apart from giving group performances, she has also evolved into soloist with her own choreography work.
Currently she is based out in Munich, Germany and she is actively performing and collaborating with artists from various disciplines. She has been mentored by Dr Rajyashree Ramesh, Berlin and Mavin Khoo, London. Deepa is teaching Bharatanatyam to range of age groups in her dance school Margam.
